Mechanisms of Large Actuation Strain in Dielectric Elastomers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Subject to a voltage, a dielectric elastomer (DE) deforms. Voltage-induced strains of above 100% have been observed when DEs are prestretched, and for DEs of certain network structures. Understanding mechanisms of large actuation strains is an active area of research. We propose that the voltage-stretch response of DEs may be modified by prestretch, or by using polymers with ‘‘short’’ chains. This modification results in suppression or elimination of electromechanical instability, leading to large actuation strains. We propose a method to select and design a DE, such that the actuation strain is maximized. The theoretical predictions agree well with existing experimental data. The theory may contribute to the development of DEs with exceptional performance. VC 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part B: Polym Phys 49: 504–515, 2011

متن کاملMultilayer Dielectric Elastomers for Fast, Programmable Actuation without Prestretch.
A novel method for the fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) combines acrylic polymers and single wall carbon nanotube network electrodes. DEAs made using this technique do not require prestretching, have extremely thin electrodes, and can be actuated at low voltage. The method is applied to create a multimorph device with nine actuation modes based on just four inputs.

In this paper, we investigated the temperature-dependent viscoelastic behavior of dielectric elastomers (DEs) and the effects of viscoelasticity on the electro-actuation behavior. We performed dynamic thermomechanical analysis to measure the master curve of the stress relaxation function and the temperature dependence of the relaxation time of VHB 4905, a commonly used DE. The master curve was ...
متن کاملLarge deformation and electromechanical instability of a dielectric elastomer tube actuator
This paper theoretically analyzes a dielectric elastomer tube actuator DETA . Subject to a voltage difference between the inner and outer surfaces, the actuator reduces in thickness and expands in length, so that the same voltage will induce an even higher electric field. This positive feedback may cause the actuator to thin down drastically, resulting in electrical breakdown. We obtain an anal...
